yes we are all excited GeForce RTX 4090. Yes, it will be available in a few weeks.Yes, it’s almost guaranteed to be an absolute GPU monster, taking us to new 8K gaming heights (with proper ridiculous price tag).
But there’s another yet-to-be-announced graphics card that I’m more interested in.Well, technically there are two – I’d still like to see a more wallet friendly graphics card RTX 4070 – But here, I’m going to talk about a potential new flagship that Nvidia might be working on: the RTX 4090 Ti.
Look, the RTX 4090 has been confirmed to use Nvidia’s “AD102” GPU chip, and the two models have RTX 4080 AD103 and AD104 chips will be used. But the AD102 chip that powers the RTX 4090 is not a full-fat version of the AD102; that means it doesn’t have access to the full set of CUDA cores that the chip is capable of.
Now, this is a common practice among chipmakers. After all, mass-producing one chip for two different GPUs is cheaper than producing two completely different chips. But now that we know the specs of the AD102 chip, Nvidia may have inadvertently given us a glimpse into the power of the RTX 4090 Ti using the AD102.
Analysis: Generationally, the RTX 4090 Ti could blow its predecessor out of the water
Let’s break down the numbers quickly. The RTX 4090 will have 16,384 CUDA cores, compared to the AD102 chip’s potential maximum of 18,434 – that’s 71% more than the GA102 chip in the current-generation RTX 3090 Ti. Naturally there are more tensor and ray tracing cores too.
Since the RTX 4090 does have the full 24GB of VRAM used by the AD102, that means we could see a performance boost of about 12.5% without other tweaks. This sounds reasonable to me; the RTX 3090 Ti is 10-15% better than the regular 3090 in most areas, so this is in line with previous generations.
RTX 4090 Do Uses the AD102’s listed max boost clock of 2.52GHz, so don’t expect a higher clock speed from the 4090 Ti — unless, of course, Nvidia has a secret AD101 chip in the works.Still, a 4090 Ti with a full-fat AD102 chip will undoubtedly be one of them best graphics card did.
