Mayor tears up Russian flag after Ukraine retakes northern Kharkiv
Joe Biden denounced Russia for “an overt nuclear threat to Europe” in a speech to the United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday.
Mr Biden denounced Russia’s “savage, unnecessary war” against Ukraine, and he announced his support for a country hit by food shortages as a result of the invasion.
Biden’s speech came a day after Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the partial mobilization of 300,000 reservists as his troops struggled to regain their footing after a string of victories on the battlefield in Ukraine.
Russia’s war in Ukraine dominated the first day of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) as world leaders gathered in person for the summit three years later in New York.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres said the 77th meeting was held at a time when the world was in “great danger” and “paralysis” due to war, climate chaos, hatred, poverty and inequality. World leaders condemned the Russian invasion.
France’s Emmanuel Macron has called Moscow’s war a return to “imperialism” while rejecting the position of a neutral country.
Biden says Russia posed ‘open nuclear threat’ to Europe
Joe Biden accused Russia of “making an overt nuclear threat to Europe” in his speech to the UN General Assembly.
Biden’s comments came a day after Russian President Vladimir Putin appeared to threaten a nuclear reaction to his military defeat in Ukraine.
“President Putin has made an open nuclear threat to Europe and recklessly disregarded the responsibilities of the non-proliferation regime,” Mr Biden said.
He added that Russia had “brazenly violated the core principles of the UN Charter”.
A day earlier, Putin said in a nationally televised address: “Russia will use all available means to deal with threats to its territorial integrity – this is not bluff.”

In his speech to the UN General Assembly, Joe Biden condemned Russia’s “barbaric, unnecessary war” in Ukraine.
Mr Biden said Russia was “trying to wipe a sovereign nation off the map and was “brazenly violating the core principles of the UN Charter”.
Biden’s remarks came a day after Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a partial mobilization of 300,000 troops to support his forces, which Ukrainian troops have pushed back in recent weeks.
“This war is about eliminating Ukraine’s right to exist as a country,” Mr Biden added.

Joe Biden will use his speech to the United Nations General Assembly to announce $2.9 billion in global food security aid to address shortages caused by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and climate change.

Iran says it doesn’t want nukes
Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi has said his country does not want nuclear weapons and wants to revive a deal with the West over its nuclear program, but has expressed doubts about Washington’s commitment to a deal.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran does not seek to manufacture or acquire nuclear weapons, and such weapons have no place in our doctrine,” Mr. Raisi said.
Former U.S. President Donald Trump has abandoned a comprehensive nuclear deal brokered by the U.S. brokered by Barack Obama and European powers.
“The United States has trampled on the nuclear deal,” said Lacey, who was sworn in as president just a year ago.
“Our desire is for only one thing: to keep our promises,” Mr. Lacey said, before asking if Iran could “really trust without assurances and assurances” that the United States would not do the same thing again.
European and U.S. officials have been negotiating with Iran to revive the deal, but progress has stalled recently.

Iranian president slams Trump at UN General Assembly
Iranian President Ibrahim Raisi slammed former President Donald Trump in a speech to the United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday.
Mr Raisi attacked Mr Trump for authorizing the assassination of Iranian general Qassem Soleimani, whom he described as “a freedom seeker who became a martyr” as he held up a photo of the late Quds Force commander.
Mr. Rice, who did not name Mr. Trump, said “the former President of the United States of America has effectively signed this document of barbaric, illegal and immoral crime.”
“The right pursuit of justice will not be abandoned in the face of the President of the United States acknowledging the crime of his signature. We will bring to justice through a fair court those who killed our beloved General Qassem Soleimani, ‘ he added.
Mr Rice also criticized the Trump administration for abandoning a comprehensive deal brokered by the United States and European powers to limit Iran’s nuclear program.
“The United States has trampled on the nuclear deal,” said Lacey, who was sworn in as president just a year ago.
Mr. Raisi’s speech came as protests erupted across Iran in recent days over the arrest of a 22-year-old woman by the Islamic Republic’s ethics police on suspicion of violating the Islamic Republic’s religious dress code.
The protests were violently suppressed by the police and security services.

Turkey loots Kashmir at UN General Assembly
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan discussed Kashmir at the ongoing 77th UN General Assembly on Tuesday.
The Himalayan region of Kashmir is at the heart of a decades-long dispute between India and Pakistan, which both countries claim as their territory but control only part of it.
Erdogan, a close ally of Pakistan, said he wanted “permanent peace” in the region.
“India and Pakistan have not established peace and unity with each other after establishing their sovereignty and independence 75 years ago,” he said.
“This is very unfortunate. We hope and pray that Kashmir will establish a just and lasting peace and prosperity.”
