The recently released trombone rhythm game is taking the internet by storm just because it deserves it.
Originally discovered by our friends computer gamer (opens in new tab) and has been labelled “the world’s first trombone-based rhythm music game” – according to the game’s Steam page (opens in new tab) – Trombone Champ lets players blast their way through more than 20 classic tracks, including national anthems, marches, classical, electronica, folk classics, and more. As with most rhythm games, the aim is to play the song as accurately as possible to score points, or “Tromboner Cards” in this case.
Thankfully, for those with no musical talent, all you need is a controller or mouse and keyboard to play, and no musical knowledge. You really have to watch the Trombone Champ clip to see its appeal. What sets Trombone Champ apart, besides being a first of its kind, is that unlike most other music games, it lets players play any note at any time—meaning you’re not just playing with Play along with the music, you’re playing it, resulting in hilarious renditions of some very famous songs, one of which you can see below.
A lot of Trombone Champ’s charm comes from the Mii-like characters that go all out on screen, and the subtitles that appear with every note you hit. Depending on how accurately you play the trombone, you’ll get “Perfecto,” “Nice,” “Ok,” “Meh,” and maybe even “Nasty.” This only adds to the overall vibe of the game.
