A woman in India has been accused of killing her 3-year-old child and dumping her body in a pile of rubbish.
The incident took place on Monday in the Palghha district of the western state of Maharashtra, police said on Tuesday.
Local police arrested the accused, identified as 37-year-old Afsana, also known as Tara Sulemani. The mother allegedly killed her daughter, packed her child’s body in a plastic bag and dumped the body near a bakery near her home, authorities said. Press Trust of India reports.
After disposing of the body, she pretended her daughter was missing, and her relatives and neighbors began searching for the child. They later found the underage girl’s body in the trash.
Neighbors and relatives began beating the mother, who later admitted to killing the child. The police rushed to the scene and arrested the woman.
Authorities also said the child had bruises all over his body.
An autopsy will confirm the exact cause of death. The motive for the murder has not yet been identified. Hindustan Times reports in Marathi.
It is unclear who lived with the woman. The whereabouts of the child’s father are also unknown.
Last month, a woman in the southern state of Tamil Nadu was accused of drowning her newborn baby in a bucket of water. The unidentified woman was recently estranged from her husband. The incident came to light when the woman was admitted to hospital with bleeding. The doctor who examined her at the hospital realized the bleeding was related to childbirth. She gave no information when asked about the baby’s condition. The woman and her husband, who later arrived at the hospital, then issued conflicting statements. This raised suspicions among hospital staff, who then rushed police to the scene. Fearing what would happen, the woman admitted to killing her newborn by drowning her in a bucket of water in a toilet minutes after giving birth. Police later recovered the baby’s body from the couple’s home.
