knowing How to get a mop on return to Monkey Island The story takes place in the game’s first act, where Guybrush Threepwood immediately makes plans to leave it behind as soon as he arrives at the dogfight island. As part of his search for Monkey Island’s secrets, Guybrush needs to board his nemesis LeChuck’s boat, which is moored at the dock.
This involved convincing Quartermaster Iron Rose that he wasn’t Guybrush Threepwood and had a mop so he could take the handy “Swabbie” vacancy. But it’s not that easy – Guybrush has never been so easy – so here’s how you get a mop on Dogfight Island so you can get past the first part of Return to Monkey Island.
How to make a mop
First, leave Iron Rose at the dock and head to the nearby Scumm Bar. In the kitchen you’ll find the chef, a proud mop owner. If you tell him to get a mop, or want to pick it up, he won’t let you take it. He says you’ll need to make one yourself, by cutting a branch from a mop tree deep in the labyrinthine forest of Dogfight Island.
You need a map to find the mop tree, and for someone to make a map for this tree, you need a reference. Guybrush needs to distract the chef so he can sample a mop and give it to Wally, a cartographer on Low Street, in exchange for a map of the mop tree.
Head to the International House of Mojo on Low Street to buy a knife and a forgiveness frog from its owner. We’ll be using a knife to sample the chef’s mop, but we’ll need to distract him by having him cook a meal first.
To distract the chef, you’ll need the “ingredients” book on the shelf at Governor Kara’s mansion. But Carla wouldn’t let Gabrush borrow any books because his last book was overdue. This is where the forgiveness of the frogs comes in. Guybrush can apologize to the amphibian for squashing beef, but he needs some information about Carla to do so.
Each player’s information is different, but around the corner of Mojo’s International House is a bust of Kara with a plaque that mentions a place with her historical connection. Then, west of the scum bar and the pier is the governor’s re-election poster offering unique adjectives associated with her character.
Use this information to fine-tune it when writing the third and fourth parts of the loan apology, and then present the frog to Kara. Make sure you pick up the stuffed toy on the floor next to her as well – it acts as your mop head.
Carla’s forgiveness led Gabrush to borrow the ingredients book from her shelf. Give it to the chef and he’ll start preparing a meal, turning the mop on for you to sample with your knife. Cut a piece for Wally and he will give you a map of the mop tree.
Take the map and enter the dogfight island forest. On the first screen, open your map and see the route to the tree. This may be different for each player, but the correct exit is represented by the forest’s three different plant types, which are green, purple and blue. Choose your exit based on the flora seen on the mop tree map and you will reach the tree of the same name. However, this is easier said than done, so if you need help be sure to read our full guide to returning to the monkey island forest map.
When you reach the tree, cut off one of its branches, then combine it with the stuffed animals in your inventory to make a mop. Mission accomplished, Swabi!
