Gearbox called the release of the Borderlands spin-off Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands a “great victory” for the studio, saying its success meant “it is now obvious [has] A new franchise” with more “experiences” already in development.
Released in March, Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands takes the tabletop-inspired action of Borderlands 2’s beloved DLC episode Tiny Tina’s Assault on Dragon Keep and builds it into a full-blown first-person fantasy adventure.
It was generally well-received by critics at launch — despite its “hodgepodge of designs,” which Eurogamer called “cute” — and it’s clearly been enough of a commercial success that Gearbox is now eager to do more.
Here’s what Gearbox Software CEO Randy Pitchford said at Embracer Group Annual General Meeting, describing Little Tina’s Wonderland as a “major victory” for the developers. “Wonderlands beat all of our target expectations, both critically and commercially,” explained Pitchford, “I’m pleased to report that in addition to this win that will bring us in the next few quarters In addition to the great financial returns, we have established a solid beachhead.”
Pitchford said the success of Wonderlands meant “we now obviously have a new franchise” and confirmed “experiences to come” [are] Gearbox is already in development”. Whether these “experiences” are DLC for existing games or some form of full-fat follow-up remains to be seen.
Wonderlands’ “great win” has been acknowledged after admitting that Embracer Group’s other high-profile game — developer Volition’s Saints Row reboot — didn’t get the response the company had hoped for when it launched last month .
