Bridgetton star Jonathan Bailey is in talks with Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo to star in Jon M. Zhu’s live-action ‘Wicked,’ type (opens in new tab) Report.
Wicked, which earned more than $1 billion in its nearly 20-year Broadway run, is a musical prequel to The Wizard of Oz, telling the story of how Elphaba became the Wicked Witch of the West. The film will be split into two parts, the first in 2024 and the second in 2025. Erivo will play Elphaba and Grande will play the good witch Glinda. Bailey will play Elphaba’s love interest Fiyero.
Stephen Schwartz, who wrote the music and lyrics for the Tony Award-winning show, will return to adapt his work for the big screen. Winnie Holzman (who also wrote the Claire Danes teen drama My So Called Life) will co-write the script. The original musical is based on author Gregory Maguire’s novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West.
Bailey stars as Anthony Bridgerton in Netflix’s Regency-era romance, the second season of which centers on his love affair with Kate Sharma. It was previously reported that Bailey will star alongside Matt Bomer in Showtime’s limited series “Fellow Travelers,” playing Bomer’s romantic lover. He is currently in pre-production for the upcoming comedy Maria, co-starring Felicity Jones.
Evil: Part One will be released in 2024.
