LOISA, Puerto Rico (AP) — Nelson Sirino was sleeping when Hurricane Fiona in Loisa, Puerto Rico blew the roof off his home. “I had to run downstairs,” he said.
The storm was blamed for directly killing at least four people as it made its way across the Caribbean, with winds and torrential rain in Puerto Rico leaving most people on the U.S. territory without electricity or running water.
People trapped inside must be rescued after historic flooding in Puerto Rico; residents take shelter at schools with their pets, drivers drive through dark streets and crops are razed to the ground.
In the Dominican Republic, residents wade through floodwaters around their homes and struggle to clear muddy streets on their doorsteps, salvaging and clearing their homes and belongings as much as possible.
Fiona intensified into a Category 4 storm after devastation in Puerto Rico on Wednesday, hitting the Dominican Republic and the Turks and Caicos Islands, and is expected to squeeze past Bermuda later this week.
